  1. 01Shop with a list, always.

    The list is the decision, made once, while you’re thinking clearly. Everything not on it has to argue its way in.

  2. 02Never shop hungry.

    Hunger is the store’s best salesman. Eat a real meal or a protein snack first and the junk loses most of its pull.

  3. 03Perimeter first, aisles with a purpose.

    Fresh food lives on the walls — produce, meat, dairy. The center aisles are for targeted grabs, not wandering.

  4. 04Half the cart is produce.

    If half of what comes home is plants, half of what you eat is plants. The cart decides the week.

  5. 05Protein anchors the cart.

    Chicken, fish, lean beef, eggs, Greek yogurt — buy protein for every day of the week and the meals build themselves.

  6. 06Frozen counts. So does canned.

    Frozen veg and canned beans are as nutritious as fresh, cheaper, and they don’t rot in the drawer. Convenience you don’t have to apologize for.

  7. 07Read the back, not the front.

    The front of the package is an ad. Serving size, protein, and added sugar on the label are the only claims that count.

  8. 08Eye level is where profit lives.

    Brands pay for shelf placement at your eye line — and your kids’. The better deal and the better food are usually up top or down low.
